The 2025 presidential election in Poland may mark a turning point, setting new trends in how campaigns are conducted in modern democracies. A key feature was the weakening of institutions meant to safeguard electoral integrity and the blurring of roles among key actors in the process.
Campaigning moved largely to digital platforms, where candidate-influencers gained both reach and revenue through interviews with fellow candidates—some also active as influencers. This mix of political messaging and entertainment disrupted traditional campaigning norms.
Gaps in campaign finance transparency were compounded by the National Election Commission’s inaction amid growing procedural confusion and waves of disinformation. In response, groups posing as civil society actors used unauthorized tools to influence the process under the guise of civic engagement.

Dr. Sonia Horonziak is the Coordinator of the Democracy and Civil Society Program at the Institute of Public Affairs. In the years 2020-2023, she worked as a Specialist for Scientific Contacts at the Polish Academy of Sciences – Scientific Centre in Vienna and holds PhD from. Until 2018, she was an acting president of the Polish Foundation for Education of Polish Children Living Abroad (pol. Fundacja Edukacji Polonijnej). For years, she has been cooperating with scientific institutions and NGOs in Poland and abroad by promoting Polish research abroad, supporting education among Polish children in different countries and establishing international scientific contacts with multiple European organizations. Author of many publications in the field of political polarization, democratic theory, electoral processes and German political thought. She is a Doctor of political science and administration. Graduate of the Jagiellonian University in Krakow and a research scholarship program at the Technische Universität Dresden, Germany.
Dr. Dominika Bychawska-Siniarska is a human rights lawyer, PhD in law, expert on freedom of expression for the Council of Europe, and affiliated with the Helsinki Foundation for Human Rights.
Zosia Lutkiewicz is a democracy and civil society expert focused on electoral integrity and citizen engagement across Europe and globally. As President of the Political Accountability Foundation (PAF), she leads Poland’s non-partisan election observation efforts and promotes comprehensive electoral reform. She serves on the boards of the European Platform for Democratic Elections (EPDE) and the Global Network of Domestic Election Monitors (GNDEM) where she works to tackle global threats to election integrity. Her experience advancing democracy and civil society development in Belarus, Russia, and Uzbekistan, including from the EU level, informs her strategic, values-driven approach grounded in non-partisanship, solidarity, and civic empowerment.
