The European Platform for Democratic Elections (EPDE) and Expert Forum (EFOR) are pleased to invite you to a briefing on Romania’s upcoming 2025 presidential elections, set to take place on May 4 and 18.
After the annulment of the 2024 elections, public interest in organizing the new electoral process increased significantly. Key aspects such as candidate registration, campaigning, and campaign finance were spotlighted. The Government adopted new regulations regarding online campaigning, but criticism has already arisen and the measures in place risk putting free speech and the level playing field under question.
EFOR monitored the key developments in the previous months and will present some of the main takeaways regarding the electoral process, the candidates, and their campaigns. Context.ro, one of the leading independent media outlets in Romania will presents some of the conclusions of investigations on social media campaigning and disinformation. The briefing will address critical questions, including: What steps did the authorities take after the annulled elections? How did the online campaigning landscape evolve? And what are the main concerns as we approach the upcoming elections?
