The panel discussion “The AI moment in the Transatlantic Super-Election Year” explored the potential opportunities and threats of artificial intelligence in the context of the upcoming elections in the transatlantic world and globally.

Moderated by Tanit Koch, Ginny Badanes, Christiane Hoffmann, Ben Brake, and Lukasz Kondraciuk (EPDE) discussed how deepfakes can threaten election campaigns, the responsibilities of governments, tech companies, and consumers in combatting AI-generated misinformation, and how politicians and political campaigns can benefit from the use of AI.

“It’s imperative that we foster collaboration and synergy between governments, tech companies, and civil society to harness the full potential of AI while safeguarding liberal democracy.” – Lukasz Kondraciuk, EPDE Head of Integrity.

For the first time, AI tech is used in election campaigns and rapidly advancing. This provides both new ways to interact with constituents but also provides major tools for malign actors to interfere in democratic processes. There is great potential for mutual learning if governments, civic actors, and private sector work together.

Thanks Atlantik-Brücke e.V. for a great evening debate!
